This year, I’ve challenged the church to read
the Bible through (schedules are available on
the welcome desk.)
Last week, we started reading Leviticus.
This is just about the time that a lot of
folks get bored and stop reading.
-- Why do we need know about all the
sacrifices and priestly laws when we are not
subject to them today?
Maybe better questions would be, “What did those
sacrifices and laws represent -Why did they do
them -Why do we need to know about them?”
The answer: The sacrifices were
offerings.
Some of them were specified for whenever
a person committed sin.
Some were freewill
offerings, some for specific times of
thanksgiving.
Some were tithes to be given as a
recognition of God’s continual blessing.
But all of them forced a person to really
think about why they gave.
In some cases, they got the blood on
their own hands from the sacrifice.
They were graphic reminders that the
offering was more than just ‘money’.
These days,
I don’t think we ponder our “tithes and
offerings” enough.
